Bellport Real Estate Overview

Bellport is a village located in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 2,363.

The quaint bayside community of Bellport offers a variety of recreational and cultural venues, but perhaps the village's most prized assets are its historic 19th century houses - more than 80 of them on the National Register of Historic Places.

While the village attracts a summer rental crowd, real estate agents are quick to add it's not a Hamptons social scene. The village is largely home to professionals with families, including a few celebrities who "enjoy the community and are involved in maintaining it," said Patricia Trainor, a sales agent at Marylou Swan Realty Corp.

The Gateway Playhouse, a 500-seat theater in its 54th year in Bellport, stages live performances and operates an acting school.

The Bellport marina offers more than 150 berths, and residents can hop the village- owned ferry to Ho-Hum Beach on Fire Island or head to Mother's Beach on the Great South Bay. There is an area for fishing and crabbing, and a playground, gazebo and bandshell for summer concerts.

The Bellport Country Club is available to villagers either through membership or on a pay-as-you-play basis.

And the Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society recently featured "As Time Goes By: Remembering Ingrid Bergman," an exhibit attended by one of the late actress' daughters, village resident Isabella Rossellini.

The community's old-fashioned-looking commercial center runs along South Country Road, which serves as an informal north-south dividing line for the village. "In either direction, you are a half mile from the town center," notes Eileen Green, owner of Eileen A. Green Realty Corp.

Architectural styles include Colonials, Victorians, post- modern, ranches, capes, contemporaries and bungalows. Bellport began as an outpost of farmers and seafarers. Many of the homes on Bellport Lane were built by sea captains. The village is named for two of them - the Bell brothers. Thomas and John Bell, who arrived in the early 1800s, built a dock into the bay and a shipyard and carved out cross streets and main thoroughfares. In 1834, when the post office was established, the community was named Bell Port.

The 19th century was also a time when Bellport was one of Long Island's most popular family-oriented summer resorts, attracting statesmen, financiers, actors, writers, journalists and artists. Among them were E.B. White, who wrote a poem inspired by his summer visit, and artist William Glackens, who recorded scenes on canvas.

Today, the village, which has a mayor and four trustees, offers a four-week summer Kids Camp and provides some senior citizen programs. Students attend the South Country school district.

It is about 60 miles to Bellport Village from midtown Manhattan.
