Port Jefferson Station Real Estate Overview

Port Jefferson Station is a hamlet located in the Town of Brookhaven and in Suffolk County, New York.

The popularity of Port Jefferson Station has soared in recent years, largely because of the hamlet's improved school district and reasonably priced housing, according to real estate experts.

While much of the community's wooded landscape has given way to development, some natural areas remain. Tree-lined neighborhoods feature ranches, high-ranches, Capes, split-levels, Colonials and newer Victorian-style homes that occupy at least 1/4 acre, and often one acre of land.

Prices range from $249,000 to $450,000, with new homes commanding the higher price, according to Denise Buscemi, a sales agent at National Homefinders Signature. Condos and co-ops can be found here as well. Fairfield Properties is building 291 luxury apartments on the corner of Old Town Road and Route 347 for adults age 55 and older. Scheduled for occupancy beginning next spring, some will have a garage and basement. "It's [designed] like a condo, but it's for rent," said Michael Broxmeyer, a partner at Fairfield.

The majority of shops, businesses and restaurants can be found along Nesconset Highway and Route 112.

The area was first known as Comsewogue, a Setalcott Indian term meaning a place where several paths come together. The name Port Jefferson Station came about when the Long Island Rail Road established a station on the outskirts of the ship-building hamlet of Port Jefferson in 1873. When the train pulled in the station, the conductors would sing out, "Port Jefferson Station," and the name stuck, according to accounts. A portion of the area was known for several decades as Terryville.

Although Port Jefferson Station was primarily a farming community until the 1950s, some industry entered the area during the early 20th century. In 1921, the Port Jefferson Lace Co. opened in a warehouse and eventually expanded and became the Thomas Wilson & Co. The lace factory, which operated until the 1980s, produced mosquito netting, camouflage nets and parachutes in World War II and surgical leotards that helped prevent vascular problems for the first astronauts.

Today, residents can visit Port Jefferson, known for its shops, restaurants and ferry service to Connecticut. Heatherwood Golf Club, a public course on Nesconset Highway in Centereach, is nearby. Farther west is Sports Plus, a 4-acre family entertainment center, and Smith Haven Mall.

The majority of students attend the Comsewogue school district, while others attend the Three Village and Mount Sinai districts.

From midtown Manhattan, it is about 56 miles to Port Jefferson Station.
