Huntington Real Estate Overview

Huntington is located in the Town of Huntington in Suffolk County, New York.

Best known for its vibrant downtown, Huntington draws visitors from near and far.

The "village" (it's actually a hamlet), offers dozens of shops, restaurants, bars and other businesses. There are also arts venues, recreational activities and historical sites.

"It's cosmopolitan -- with a country feel," says Suzanne Ridenour, a sales agent with Coldwell Banker on Main Street who moved to Huntington as a single parent in the late 1970s because the community's amenities were attractive for both adults and children.

Huntington's hot spots include the Book Revue, a family- owned bookstore on New York Avenue, noted for its special programs, author readings and celebrity appearances. Other popular draws are two nonprofit venues, the Inter-Media Art Center, a media and performing arts center, and the Cinema Arts Centre, which offers a diverse program of independent, foreign and documentary films.

The Heckscher Museum of Art is located in Heckscher Park, which also has a small lake, playing fields and a playground. During the summer, free concerts and plays are staged at an outdoor amphitheater every day except Mondays through Aug. 22.

Once you leave the hub of downtown activity, Huntington becomes a quiet North Shore community, with rolling, .wooded terrain. Neighborhoods offer a mix of Colonials, capes, ranches, split-levels, and newer postmodern homes. Prices .generally range from $369,000 to $1million, according to .Ridenour.

Huntington was initially settled in 1653. It was a site of major activity during the American Revolution as the Suffolk County headquarters of British cavalry parties that seized and shipped provisions for their army and navy.

Many residents were Tory sympathizers, but most backed the Revolution. In the spring of 1775, gunpowder sent by the New York Provincial Congress was stored for use by the Suffolk Patriots in a now-preserved building on Main Street known as The Armory.

In 1777, there were more than 300 British soldiers in the hamlet, with barracks and store.houses erected around the .Presbyterian Congregational Church, built in 1715, opposite the present town hall. In the church's belfry was a prized bell, which was stolen by the British and returned after a successful petition by town leaders. On the inside of the bell, now on display in the church, is the inscription: "The town endures."

When the railroad reached Huntington in 1867, summer .visitors flocked mostly to Cold Spring Harbor, but Huntington's economy got a boost as boardinghouses and stores multiplied.

The town celebrated its 350th anniversary last year, with several special events. At its 250th birthday on July 4, 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt was the key speaker.

Today, the annual Long Island Pride Parade, celebrating the Island's gay and lesbian community, receives wide turnouts, as does the Long Island Fall Festival at Heckscher Park, which attracts more than 250,000 visitors.

Town beaches include Gold Star Battalion on West Shore Road and Mill Dam Park which borders Huntington Harbor. Students from the hamlet of Huntington attend the Huntington district. It is about 36 miles to the heart of Huntington from midtown Manhattan.
