Huntington Station Real Estate Overview

Huntington Station is located in the Town of Huntington in Suffolk County, New York.

Named for its train depot, Huntington Station offers a wide variety of housing choices, from affordable apartment complexes along bustling New York Avenue, to canopied neighborhoods of single-family homes.

"It's the forgotten area of Huntington," said Doreen Williamson, a sales agent at Coldwell Banker Sammis in Huntington, adding that outsiders may underestimate what the community has to offer.

House styles include capes, ranches, high-ranches, Colonials and split- levels.

Prices north of Jericho Turnpike generally start in the low $200,000 range and can climb as high as $589,000 for newer homes. In the area known as South Huntington (south of Jericho Turnpike), prices range from about $289,000 to $790,000.

While both areas are officially Huntington Station, most brokers treat them as separate markets.

Affordable housing, including the Highview at Huntington, can be found closer to the train station.

The Long Island Rail Road first arrived here in 1867, extending its tracks to the hills south of Huntington and building a depot surrounded by farmland.

That year, Huntington got its first street transit system - a horse-drawn stage that operated between the train station and Halesite.

The hamlet was originally called Fairground - the name of a racetrack a mile from the station. A post office was established in the railroad station in 1890.

But in 1912, the post office and community was changed to Huntington Station.

From 1909 to 1910, the railroad created the underpass on New York Avenue, and a new station was built.

Today residents have a choice of restaurants, shops, services and retail stores, including those at the Walt Whitman Mall, at their fingertips. Huntington village is nearby as well.

The majority of students attend the South Huntington school district, while others attend Huntington and Harborfields districts.

From midtown Manhattan, it is about 35 miles to Huntington Station.
